Are there fees?

Yes, but it’s small compared to a traditional wedding! You’ll need a Special Use Permit for $50 to have your ceremony at the Painted Hills.

There is no fee to enter the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

Where in the park can I elope?

There are two spots in the park that you can have your ceremony at:

Painted Hills Picnic Area: This area allows you to have 50 people (including you, your guests, and vendors). However, there is only parking for six cars— so plan ahead and carpool! Chairs are allowed in this spot.

Painted Hills Trail Overlook: This is the spot where you get the breathtaking views of the hills! In this spot, you can only have 16 people (including you, your guests, and vendors). You’re allowed 5 parking spots, but parking is free! A limited number of chairs are available only for the elderly or those with physical limitations.

What kind of wedding can I have in the park?

Weddings at the Painted Hills are simple, no-frills ceremonies in an EPIC outdoor setting. You don’t need to worry about decorations, because mother nature has you covered!! If you are looking for a place that allows music, decorations, runners, arches, tents, or other extras, this will not be your best option. But if you’re an adventurous soul looking for otherworldly views as your backdrop, this is PERFECT for you!

What time of year is best to elope here?

Okay, I’ll level with you— it’s gorgeous year-round. Mother nature painted those hills with such intention that they stay gorgeous with every changing season. However, I’d say the best time to elope at the Painted Hills is from late spring to early fall. During these months, you have the best chance for sunshine, which makes the colors of the hills really pop against the blue skies!

How & when do I get a Special Use Permit?

Grab the form to fill our for your Special Use Permit, fill it out, and mail it in with the $50 fee (cashier's check, money order, or personal check). After approval, you’ll get your permit back. Review, sign, and return the permit for final approval— then they’ll send you an authorized copy! Let the park know if your plans change. Also, you MUST have your permit in your possession at your ceremony.

Permits must be filed up to one year in advance and no later than 21 days prior to your elopement!
